Mutual Aid

Mutual aid is a community-based practice where people come together to meet one another’s needs through collective care, shared resources, and cooperative action. Mutual aid is rooted in solidarity. It recognizes that communities have the knowledge, power, and capacity to support themselves. Mutual aid efforts focus on building relationships, redistributing resources, and creating programs that aim for everyone to thrive.

Our organization centers these principles by uplifting cooperative, community-driven solutions. We work to support organizations that serve the most marginalized, prioritizing collaboration and empowerment. In response to the current political, social, and economic challenges facing the country, we provide mutual aid and solidarity across a wide range of issues and causes. This includes:

  • SNAP and food access: ensuring that individuals and families have the resources they need to stay nourished.

  • Housing justice: advocating for stable, safe, and affordable shelter for all.

  • Immigrant rights: supporting communities facing heightened risks, discrimination, and insecurity.

  • Black Lives Matter: standing against racial injustice and supporting movements for Black liberation.

  • LGBTQ+ rights: promoting safety, dignity, and equality for queer and trans communities.

  • Workers’ rights: advancing fair labor practices, economic justice, and protections for all workers.

  • And more, as new needs emerge and communities call for support.

DPU also recognizes that struggles for justice and liberation extend beyond national borders. We stand in solidarity with global human rights movements, where communities are fighting for their rights and survival.

Rooted in mutual aid, our work affirms a simple but powerful belief: when communities care for one another, we all grow stronger.
